A Code for Sports Governance

Last updated: 01 Sept 2023 Topics: Safeguarding standards

The Sport England and UK Sport Code for Sports Governance sets out the good-governance requirements for sports bodies to receive public funding.

The code has three tiers, and the requirements for an organisation depend on its size, and the amount of funding it receives.

Among the changes made in 2021, there was the need for organisations which receive a high level of public funding from either Sport England and UK Sport to have a detailed Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP).

Sport England and UK Sport will work with their funded partners to put in place the changes and timeframes for creating and publishing a DIAP.

Due to increased concerns about welfare and safety in sport and activity, the updated Code also requires Tier 3 organisations to appoint a welfare and safety lead director on the board.
