This briefing highlights things that should be considered when taking children and young people away on day trips – such as travel, ratios and insurance.
Travelling to away fixtures can be a regular activity for many clubs and teams. Trips may vary from short journeys across town to play another local team, to overnight stays, or even events overseas.
This guidance is designed to be used in addition to our briefing on overnight trips and international travel, which details the additional arrangements that must be considered for trips that involve overnight stays and international travel with children and young people.
Away day trips briefing
The download covers five main areas to help you prepare for a trip.
- Communication: young people should be given relevant details ahead of the trip, including what they need to bring with them. Coaches and volunteers should be clear on what their responsibilities are and should give parents all the relevant information in advance
- Transport should be clearly planned ahead of the event to ensure that any associated safeguarding concerns can be addressed
- Supervision and staffing: provide adequate staff and volunteers for the trip, and make sure everyone is aware and able to fulfil their responsibilities.
- Emergency procedures: everyone must be aware of their responsibility and what to do in the event of an emergency.
- Insurance: make sure the club's general insurance covers travel to away events.
