These international safeguards outline the measures that should be put in place by all organisations that provide sports activities for children and young people.
The International safeguards for children in sport were coordinated by Unicef, They reflect international declarations, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, relevant legislation, government guidance, existing child protection and safeguarding standards and good practice.
What's covered
The eight safeguards include:
- developing your policy
- procedures for responding to safeguarding concerns
- advice and support
- minimising risks to children
- guidelines for behaviour
- recruiting, training and communicating
- working with partners
- monitoring and evaluating
Implementing the safeguards
Implementation guides have been developed based on the experiences of over 50 organisations who piloted the International Safeguards. The guides are for anyone who works with children in sport or physical activity.
